Okada to be legalized - Transport Minister

The Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has revealed plans to legalize commercial motorcycle ("okada") and tricycle operations, fulfilling a campaign promise made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2024 general elections.

Speaking to the media during his familiarization visit to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) head office in Accra and the Greater Accra Regional Office at Nahrman, Hon. Nikpe explained that the government intends to revise existing laws to make "okada" and tricycle operations legal.

He emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring that the legalization process is completed within the shortest possible time.

Hon. Nikpe expressed optimism that adequate training programs and workshops would be implemented to ensure road safety for both riders and passengers.

He assured the public that necessary measures would be put in place to regulate operations and minimize risks.

As part of his visit, the minister also sought to familiarize himself with the challenges facing the DVLA and explore ways to enhance service delivery.

The Chief Executive of the DVLA, Mr. Julius Neequaye Kotey, highlighted that the government's flagship 24-hour economy policy will be integrated into the authority's activities to facilitate the legalization process.

He reiterated that both "okada" and tricycle operators would undergo mandatory training before commencing operations to ensure safety and compliance with road regulations.

The proposed legalization is expected to create employment opportunities and provide an alternative means of transportation while prioritizing safety through structured regulations and training.
