The Africa Centre for Digital Transformation (ACDT) is advocating for the Ghana Card to function as an ATM card, urging collaboration between the National Identification Authority (NIA), the Bank of Ghana (BoG), and financial institutions according to a news item published by Myjoyonline.
This innovation idea was conveyed in a press statement released by ACDT.
Commending the NIA's progress in digital identity, ACDT emphasizes the benefits of integrating the card into financial transactions, citing enhanced inclusion, security, and convenience.
ACDT proposes linking all bank accounts to the Ghana Card via a secure national database, enabling ATM withdrawals, transfers, and payments.
Biometric authentication and PIN verification at ATMs and POS systems are recommended for added security.
The organization also calls for ATM infrastructure upgrades to recognize the card's chip and encourages retailers to adopt compatible POS systems.
Clear legal and security frameworks from the BoG and regulators are deemed essential to protect users from fraud and cyber threats.
ACDT also stresses the importance of a nationwide public education campaign to guide Ghanaians on linking their cards and using them securely for financial transactions.
The ACDT statement concludes with a call for swift action to make the Ghana Card an ATM card, empowering Ghanaians with seamless and secure financial access.
