On Wednesday November 27, 2024 Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia commissioned the first batch of 100 electric buses for Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMT) to enhance Ghana's public transportation system.
This initiative aims to reduce public transport costs, improve accessibility, and contribute to global carbon footprint reduction. The Akufo-Addo/Bawumia Government's goal is to modernize and innovate the public transport sector.
The pilot phase sets a benchmark for integrating green technology into Ghana's public transportation. The introduction of these electric vehicles (EVs) is expected to lower public transport costs by 40 to 50 percent and reduce MMT's operational and maintenance costs by 50 percent.
Vice President Bawumia emphasized the broader vision of transforming the entire public transport sector and encouraged transport business operators to join organized unions to benefit from government interventions.
Despite skepticism, Bawumia remained determined to implement EVs for public transport in Ghana, highlighting the sector's importance to the economy and various essential services.
The government plans to collaborate with Technical, Vocational Educational Training (TVET) institutions to train technical staff for the EVs. The pilot phase will identify operational challenges before expanding nationwide.
The Managing Director of MMT expressed gratitude for the government's support and highlighted the expected benefits, including reduced fuel costs, affordable fares, and improved passenger experience.
