Elche vs Real Madrid Preview
Real Madrid travel to Elche looking to build on their weekend success in El Clasico. After beating Barcelona, Los Blancos could go 6 points clear of their eternal rivals with a win here away to LaLiga’s bottom club.
Elche are back under the guidance of Jorge Almiron, a surprise choice in many respects to replace Francisco given how unconvincing his first spell was. His second spell got off to a good start in terms of the result, a 2-2 draw away to Valencia, with Pere Milla netting twice at Mestalla.
There is no doubt that Elche are capable of more than what we’ve seen so far this term. They beat the drop relatively comfortably last season and there haven’t been wholesale changes to their squad. However it’s also true that they are not blessed with so much quality that you’d back them to turn it around, if they really did start to get cut adrift. Still winless this season, they are already 5 points from safety heading into this matchday and they desperately need to find a couple of wins before the World Cup break.
As for Real Madrid, with Champions League progress secured, the aim will be to put maximum points on the board in LaLiga between now and Qatar 2022 which would really put the pressure on Barcelona. They have a favourable set of fixtures which does make that a realistic possibility and they are consistently doing enough to win games, even when they aren’t quite at their best.
Sunday’s Clasico witnessed a timely return to form for Karim Benzema who scored the opening goal in a 3-1 win and had another ruled out. He deservedly won the Ballon d’Or this week, reward for an outstanding year in which he has been the standout player in European football. The Frenchman hasn’t hit those heights as consistently this season but it hasn’t mattered too much with the likes of Fede Valverde really stepping up and the in-form Uruguayan is playing the best football of his career right now.

Score Prediction: Elche 1-3 Real Madrid
Real Madrid have conceded in all but one of their league games this season, so a goal for the hosts certainly can’t be ruled out. Elche’s defence has been unconvincing pretty much all season though and they could have easily conceded more than two at the weekend, so it’s hard to look past an away win here.
